As a visitor of great fairs you are used to get guides for this, maps for that, flyers about certain brands and particular designers. This year’s furniture fair in Milan presented another way of looking at things. A way revealing that more and more people have taken notice of the environmental situation in the world. The cruising map showed all the displays and happenings, from an ecological point of view. Behind this action was the organisation Best Up (meaning Beauty, Equality, and SusTainability. The Up is there as an invitation to wake up and to get moving.) Among the brands that actually had ecological products or environmental strategies to present, was Artek (mentioned above) and Luceplan with the new outdoor lighting system – Sky – designed by Alfredo Häberli. The system is equipped with the latest generation of solar cells, which can make the light work with zero consumption. Other brands on the route were Ecomade, Material ConneXion, Matrec and some 20 more. One brand missing here, but seen at a different place, was Swedese. Their new sidetable Breeze, designed by Monica Förster (the winner of FutureDesignDays Award in 2002) has an elegant and ecological touch. Swedese also have licensed the classic Lamino chair, and other furniture, with the Swedish eco-label Svanen.
